There wasn’t much of a story mode to it, however. The single player consisted of many levels like those found in the arcade version, where the goal was to make it across the level without falling off. The developer, Sega’s Amusement Vision, presumably added the extra character to allow up to four players to choose different monkeys to play as in the new split-screen party games. They also added a new gorilla named Gongon. The console version brought back Aiai, Meemee, and Baby, the three main monkeys from the arcade version. Super Monkey Ball capitalized upon the Monkey Ball formula and was a launch title alongside the Nintendo GameCube when it was released in the United States on November 18, 2001. Super Monkey Ball – Nintendo GameCube – 2001 By using the control stick, players could tilt the floor to move their monkey balls through the level, while gaining speed and picking up Dole-licensed bananas along the way to gain extra lives and points. It seems like players have control of the ball, but in actuality they are controlling the floor. Monkey Ball’s levels are platforms floating in the sky, so one wrong move and the monkey will fall off and lose a life. The premise of the game is simple: guide a monkey in a ball through a series of obstacles to get from the start of the level to the finish, without falling off. It is doubtful that many people foresaw the popularity of Monkey Ball when it was first launched, but the simplistic controls and wacky fun kept drawing the Japanese back for more. Players used a unique, banana-shaped controller to control one of three monkeys in their transparent balls. Monkey Ball debuted as a Japanese arcade game in 2001. Today, we’ll take a look the franchise’s complete history, leading up to the new DS game that’s set to hit stores this month. Sega has brought both of these fun ideas together to create Super Monkey Ball, a kooky franchise that has a single player mode that will keep you on your toes and a multiplayer mode that’ll be a hit at any party. If you’ve also fantasized about rolling around in a clear, transparent ball, you’re in even more luck. If you’ve ever wanted to be a monkey, you’re in luck.
